In the mid 1920s, the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railway capitalized on its electrified route through Montana, by building a spur line to carry adventurous travelers to Yellowstone National Park. The Gallatin Gateway Inn was built to serve and refresh weary travelers.
In an astonishing four months, crews of as many as 500 men completed the 42,000 square foot Spanish-style building.
Unquestionably the event of the year in the greater Gallatin Valley, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle claimed 20,000 people descended on the Inn for its grand opening, overshadowing the flight of Lindbergh in the Montana headlines on June 17, 1927.
From its advanced fire protection systems to a telephone in each room, Gallatin Gateway Inn was touted as one of the most luxurious and sophisticated hotels of its day.
The west continued to draw tourists in increasing numbers, but the railroads ran into difficulty as highway travel improved, and the Inn fell into disrepair. After extensive restoration, the Gallatin Gateway Inn is once again a gracious, full service hotel, offering superb dining and accommodations for today’s traveler
